OUR FOOD COMES AND Owen stays true to his word. We ignore me laying out my feelings... again. We ignore him trying to gently turn me down... again. You’d think for a woman who has no confidence and is afraid to talk to men, I’d be a little less likely to lay it all out there for him. Especially multiple times. But there’s something about Owen that puts me at ease and makes me want to spill all my deepest darkest secrets.

“So, what’s Lucas’s story?” I stuff a bite of food into my mouth, letting out a moan. This is the best meal I’ve ever had and I don’t even know what it is.

“He’s a fucker.”

“Seriously, he’s so quiet. I know nothing about him.”

“Eh, he’s smart, successful and good looking if you’re attracted to the hobo look.” He shrugs his shoulders.

“He doesn’t look like a hobo!” I chuckle.

“He does. Wait until you see him get annoyed with his mane of hair, he ties it up in a man bun. Totally looks like a dirty hobo.”

“Well, that hobo’s shoes cost more than my entire wardrobe.”

“That’s sad, we’re gonna have to change that.” He smirks when I glare at him.

“No, we don’t. I'm not letting you buy me more stuff.”

“Why not?”

“Because I'm not your girlfriend.”

“So?”

“So, you can't buy me stuff.”

“I can buy you whatever the fuck I wanna buy you. I dare you to try and stop me.”

“Why do you have to be so difficult?”

“Why can't I buy my friend things? Aren’t we friends?”

“Yes, but-”

“Nope, that means I can give you gifts.”

“Only on my birthday and Christmas.” I hold up a finger, stopping him before he gets ahead of himself.

“Fuck that, sunshine. I’ll buy you gifts because it’s Friday or it’s the seventh of the month. You can't tell me when I can and can't buy you shit.”

“I’ll return it, give it away, donate it. You’re not spending your money on me.”

“If you return it, they’ll give you a refund, if you give it away or donate it, I'm still spending money. The only difference is someone else will be reaping the benefits. That’s pretty stupid on your part, sunshine.” He throws me a shit-eating grin.

I open my mouth to respond when someone approaches our table.

“Carrie? Carrie Lewis?” I glance up to find a man I never thought I’d see ever again.

“Chad?”

“Yeah. How are you? I haven’t seen you since high school.”

“I'm doing really good. How are you?”

“Great. I just moved back here for a new job at Scott, Powell and Coleman.”

My eyes snap to Owen, a smirk spreads across his lips, his eyes twinkle with mischief.

“Oh yeah? What’s it like there? I hear the guys that own the place are real dicks.” Owen feigns interest.

“I haven’t had any issues yet, but I heard two of the three of them are total assholes.” Chad plays right into his hand. I didn’t think Owen’s grin could widen any further, I was wrong.

“That’s awesome.” I cut in before Owen can get anything else out of him.
